Juliano Assunção is the Executive Director of CPI/PUC-Rio and Professor in the Department of Economics at PUC-Rio. Since 2011, he has been working at CPI/PUC-Rio, contributing to improving climate policies in Brazil through evidence-based analyses and direct engagement with policymakers and civil society. Juliano provides strategic guidance to CPI/PUC-Rio’s research and projects, focusing in particular on the following areas: improving policies to increase efficiency in land use; adressing compliance with the Forest Code; the relationship between productivity gains and protection of natural resources; and Brazil’s entry into the carbon market as an opportunity to advance conservation in the Amazon.  

Juliano also coordinates the Amazon 2030 project, which aims to leverage a sustainable development plan for the Brazilian Amazon by 2030.  

In 2024, with Brazil holding the presidency of the G20, Juliano took on the position of Technical Coordinator of the Expert Group of the G20 Task Force for Global Mobilization against Climate Change (TF-CLIMA).

He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from PUC-Rio, a Master’s in Economics from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), and a Bachelor’s in Economics, also from UFMG. With a solid academic career, he has numerous articles published in scientific journals, participation in doctoral and master’s thesis committees, supervision of doctoral and master’s students, and has delivered several lectures at national and international conferences. In 2023, he was a speaker at TEDxAmazônia, sharing his findings on the carbon market as an opportunity for economic development in the Amazon region.
