Energizing Finance: Barriers and Opportunities to Unlock Finance for Energy Access

Date: Thursday, May 3rd
Time: 14:30 – 16:00
Location: Convento do Beato, Rua do Beato, 48, Lisbon, Portugal

This session, facilitated by CPI’s Executive Director of Climate Finance, Dr. Barbara Buchner, and organized by CPI, Practical Action, and Hivos, will showcase energy finance entrepreneurs including those from ‘the Lab,’ a public-private initiative that has mobilized more than $1 billion in energy access finance and sustainable investment to date. These entrepreneurs will be matched with real investors for a short series of on-stage ‘Dragon’s Den’ discussions that will highlight specific barriers and opportunities to unlocking energy access finance on the ground. Audience members will then have a chance to participate by drawing on expertise from a high-level panel of public and private decision makers around the specific barriers and opportunities highlighted in the on-stage interviews, but also on bigger picture solutions to unlocking energy access finance. Key questions include the roles of various actors, how to move from solutions to scale, and how to channel investment into the “final frontier” of energy access. Key outcomes of the session include an introduction to transformative business models, as well as a chance to understand directly from public and private investors what it takes to unlock energy access finance.
