ABOUT CPI

Climate Policy Initiative (CPI) is an analysis and advisory organization with deep expertise in finance and policy. Our mission is to help governments, businesses, and financial institutions drive economic growth while addressing climate change. CPI has seven offices around the world in Brazil, India, Indonesia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

CPI’s Climate Law and Governance program provides decision makers with in-depth analysis of Brazil’s legal and regulatory framework and governance for key climate issues including land use, land rights, infrastructure, and energy.

In Brazil, CPI has a partnership with PUC-Rio. CPI/PUC-Rio supports public policies in Brazil through evidence-based research and strategic partnerships with members of the government and civil society.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Analyst will participate in the development of robust and careful empirical analysis of agriculture, land use, family farming, financial instruments and climate finance. The Analyst will be primarily dedicated to CPI Brazil’s Climate Finance agenda, collaborating with the tracking of climate finance flows in Brazil through the treatment and analysis of a varied set of databases.

The ideal candidate for the position is focused, self-driven, and empirically curious. CPI expects the Analyst to produce high-quality materials under demanding deadlines, so the ideal candidate must also systematically demonstrate acute attention to detail and a strong capacity to prioritize when simultaneously tackling multiple tasks.

CPI offers a challenging environment that requires independent thinking, collaboration, and pragmatic problem solving. The role of Data Analyst supports the deliverables of CPI’s Climate Finance work stream in its Brazil office that provide in-depth analysis of finance for climate mitigation, adaptation and loss and damages in the country. Potential databases for analysis include international development finance, government spending, development bank’s reports and capital market databases. The analyst will also collaborate with the colleagues from other CPI offices across CPI, perfecting the climate finance tracking work.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Includes the following and others as assigned:

  • Support the research team in the efficient collection and analysis of varied and cross-disciplinary data to incorporate into usable and reportable formats;
  • Handle a variety of data formats (including spatial data) using high-level scripting language;
  • Build and run procedures for statistical analyses using high-level scripting language;
  • Produce and format analytical output (tables, graphs, maps);
  • Strictly observe requirements for transparent and reproducible research in the execution of daily tasks;
  • Lead team’s data and knowledge management efforts;
  • Work with CPI’s communications and research teams to develop data visualizations and web interfaces;
  • Assist in the writing and editing of high-quality CPI products, including full reports, executive summaries, blogs, and presentations;
  • Produce high-quality materials on demanding deadlines;
  • Communicate and collaborate with CPI staff working around the globe;

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Experience with data management and analytics using high-level programming languages (preferably R or Python) is required
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • An excellent team player who is flexible, proactive and able to multi-task
  • Degree in statistics, data science or a similar field with an emphasis on quantitative analysis and data use (master’s degree or PhD counts as experience in data use)
  • Experience with version-control systems (preferably Git)

Beneficial:

  • Experience with GIS using high-level programming languages (preferably R, Python or QGIS / ArcGIS)
  • Experience with data visualization methods, web scrapping and regular expression is a plus
  • Ability to explain and interpret results to non-expert colleagues
  • Highly developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Detail-oriented and able to take ownership of tasks with personal drive and to work with minimal supervision
  • Experience with data visualization interfaces/tools such as Tableau is a plus
  • Previous background and experience in Climate Finance is a plus.

WORK REGIME

Location: Matteo Ricci Research Center at PUC-Rio (Estrada da Gávea, nº 50, 4th floor – Rio de Janeiro – RJ). Work is performed in a hybrid model, with in-person attendance on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and flexible hours.
