POSITION SUMMARY 

As part of CPI’s global communications team, the Design Intern will support the development and publication of data visualization graphics. 

Our visual communication function is a crucial component in ensuring that CPI’s work is well understood and resonates with our target audience of policymakers, regulators, financial professionals, investors, and other key stakeholders in the climate finance and policy ecosystem. This internship offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in both creative design and data-driven storytelling. 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Support the design team in conceptualizing and executing data visualization for CPI knowledge products, including charts, graphs, tables, maps, infographics, and other visual approaches to interpreting our finance and policy analysis. 
  • Provide design refinements to publications, PowerPoint presentations, and other digital outputs. 
  • Develop, refine, and work within branded templates across Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft applications, while maintaining visual brand alignment for CPI and its programs. 
  • Collaborate with the design team to brainstorm ideas and give feedback for various output types. 
  • Manage time between different types of projects across multiple offices and programs, while completing deliverables in a timely manner. 

COMPETENCIES & PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES 

Essential 

  • Currently pursuing or recently graduated with a degree in Graphic Design, Data Science, Communications, or a related field. 
  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and InDesign, and familiarity with other design tools. 
  • Basic familiarity with Microsoft Excel, Word and Powerpoint. 
  • Strong understanding of design principles, typography, and color theory. 
  • Strong organizational, project management, and prioritization skills, with ability to work flexibly and with a solutions-oriented approach to manage multiple deliverables on tight deadlines. 
  • Independent worker and strategic thinker, who learns quickly and can successfully navigate uncharted territory. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships in a cross-cultural, global working environment, including polished, diplomatic communication to overcome barriers, meet deadlines, and achieve project goals. 
  • Creative vision, a passion for learning, and ability to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and advancements in data visualization and design techniques, tools, and technologies. 

Desirable 

  • Familiarity with data visualization tools such as Flourish, Datawrapper, or Tableau 
  • An affinity for numbers and quantitative data, with the ability to clearly communicate the reasoning behind design choices. 
  • Background or understanding of climate policy, climate finance, and/or sustainable development.

Location & Compensation 

Location: The Design Intern will be based in the US, with a preference for candidates in the Washington D.C. area. Regrettably, CPI is unable to provide visa support for this role and we ask that all applicants ensure they have the right to work in the United States before applying.  

Reports to: Design Associate

Contract: 3-6 months, 20 hrs/week

Compensation: $23/hr
