Tiza Mafira, CPI Indonesia’s Senior Analyst, attended FGD – Joint Working Plan for Low-Emission Oil Palm Development in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan. This FGD was held to further discuss a working plan for ‘Low-emission Oil Palm Development’ project in East Kalimantan together with the East Kalimantan government body responsible for estate crops. Under ‘Green Growth Compact’ program framework, this project is aimed at supporting the acceleration of green economic transformation in East Kalimantan.

In this FGD, CPI identified three main steps which would directly contribute to programs and targets set by the East Kalimantan Estate Crops Office, particularly their target of increasing smallholder farmers’ capacity to partner with mills. These three steps are:

  1. to map the oil palm supply chain for visibility of key players and their locations
  2. to strengthen smallholder organization and institutions to reduce risks born by individual farmers
  3. to help increase access to finance for smallholders as working capital

This FGD was organized by The Nature Conservancy (TNC), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), and Climate Policy Initiative (CPI) in conjunction with East Kalimantan Estate Crops Office (Disbun) and Regional Climate Change Council (DDPI).
